Thanos has played a big part in the Marvel universe, both in the comics and movies. He has been characterized as the most evil and powerful enemy Marvel heroes ever face. All-present in the comics, he was slowly introduced the Marvel Cinematic universe with many Easter Eggs that led to the Avengers:Infinity War and Avengers:Endgame movies. However, there are many things you might not know about the all-powerful Thanos. Here are some interesting facts about this Marvel character.
First comic book appearance. Let’s start with his introduction to the Marvel Universe. He made his first appearance in The Invincible Iron Man issue 55 that was released in February 1973. He was originally created by Jim Starlin while taking psychology courses in college. So, Thanos is 46 years old today.
Place of origin. He was born on Saturn’s moon Titan. His parents were two Eternals Mentor and Sui-San. As one of the last sons of A’Lars (Mentor), progenitor of the second colony of Eternals on Titan (a moon orbiting the planet Saturn), he
Look.In the comics, he is described standing at 6 feet, 7 inches tall, and with weight of 985 pounds.
An ugly child. He was very ugly in his infancy, and his mother even tried killing him because of the dreadful looks.
Genetics. He was born with a genetic disorder known as ”The Deviant Syndrome”.
He’s a mutant. Believe it or not, Thanos is one of the mutant characters. His mutant trait gives him many physical as well as psychological powers. With is physical attributes, telekinetic and telepathic abilities, he can also fly, manipulate energy, teleport, and do many other things.
Name. His name is a modification that is taken from the word Greek Thanatos which means death.
Childhood pacifism. During his childhood he was practicing pacifism. But he was a melancholic and nihilistic loner that only played with pets and his brother Eros. But he later devoted himself to Death and became the Thanos we know.
His Father & Grandfather Created Drax To Kill Him. After an incident where he used his spaceship to attack people, his father Mentor and his grandfather Kronos believed he had gone too far. So, they imbued the spirit of Douglas in a clay body and made Drax the Destroyer with a clear mission of killing Thanos.
In love with Death. Because he spent so much time planning the destruction of the multiverse, he eventually fell in love with Death, or the embodiment of Death – shown as a human woman who rules over the afterlife. After they broke up, Death banned Thanos from her realm which meant he couldn’t die. But they did have a son – Rot.
He killed his family. Thanos killed his own family to impress Death.
Adam Warlock. One of his biggest enemies was Adam Warlock, who leads the charge against Thanos in his pursuit to collect the Infinity Stones. Warlock gathers the Avengers, Captain Marvel, and Moondragon to defeat Thanos.
Foster Father to Gamora. Thanos adopted Gamora when he saved her from the genocide carried out against her people. He wanted to raise her as his personal lieutenant.
First television appearance. The first time he appeared on television was on the Silver Surfer cartoon that aired in 1998.
Many opponents. Thanos faced many high-powered opponents like the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Odin, Galactus, and many others.
He doesn’t need armour. Thanos is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe, and more than strong enough to take a lot of punishment, even without his armor. The armor is there for protection from cosmic-level threats.
His team. He has a team of superpowered aliens – Cull Obsidian or Black Order. The original members were Black Dwarf, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and Supergiant.
Weakness. His weakness is actually very psychological, with his desire for death and self-destruction. Unbelievable as it may seem, he has a subconscious desire to be defeated with a lack of self-confidence. The reason why he constantly fails is that he secretly won’t allow himself to win.
Infinity stones. Thanos is the only character in the whole Marvel universe that was able to collect all Infinity Gems and create the Infinity Gauntlet. He used them to erase half of the living things in the
universe, to get the love of Death.
He Was Defeated By Squirrel Girl. Not many will believe this, but the insanely powerful Thanos was once defeated by Squirrel Girl in the comics.
An Avenger brother. His brother, Eros, fought with the Avengers and he was given the name StarFox.
Intelligence, His intelligence equally compliments his immense powers, and he was able to outsmart Bruce Banner, Tony Stark and Galactus.
Clones, In the comics, he created many clones of himself because he wanted to give himself a real challenge. They were kept in stasis, but they did manage to escape only to be defeated by Adam Warlock, Gamora, and even Thanos.
Original, actor Although Thanos is played by Josh Brolin in the movie, he was first played by Damion Poitier in the credits scene of The Avengers 2012 movie.
